“Dharavi Redevelopment: Survey to Determine Eligibility of Slum Dwellers for Rehabilitation Begins”

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), in collaboration with the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group, is set to conduct a survey to ascertain the eligibility of slum dwellers for rehabilitation. The survey aims to determine the total population of Dharavi, with an estimated 1 million residents in the slum cluster.

Scheduled to conclude by the end of 2024, the survey will play a pivotal role in shaping the master plan for the redevelopment. The DRPPL will engage a company to collect data and biometrics of slum dwellers, focusing on two key components: rehabilitation and free sale of apartments in the open market.

Eligibility criteria set by the Maharashtra government state that slum dwellers settled before the year 2000 qualify for free housing under the rehabilitation component. Others will have the option of free housing, with the condition that they contribute to the construction cost.

SVR Srinivas, head of the Dharavi redevelopment project, stated that the teams would visit each household, collect biometric data, and take approximately nine months to complete the survey.

The master plan’s formulation hinges on the exact number of eligible slum dwellers, determining the allocation of space for rehabilitation, sale, open areas, and commercial and retail spaces in Dharavi, as explained by Mumbai-based architect Vikas Shah.

In a significant development, the Adani Group, partnering with renowned architect Hafeez Contractor, unveiled its Dharavi project on January 1. Contractor, a Padma Bhushan recipient, brings extensive expertise in the Indian real estate sector, having designed prominent projects nationally and internationally.
