GURUGRAM — The Gurugram Metro Rail Ltd. (GMRL) has identified 335.52 kilometers of roads, lanes, and adjoining areas that require upgrades to ensure seamless access to the upcoming metro project, as published by Hindustan Times.
The initiative aims to enhance walkability and non-motorized transport (NMT) around the metro corridor, benefiting daily commuters, officials said.
GMRL has reached out to various civic agencies, urging them to prioritize road improvements that will facilitate easier metro access. “You are requested to consider the adjoining roads for improvement to promote walkability and multi-modal integration for ease of metro connectivity. A street length of 332.5 km has been prioritized for improvement,” stated a letter from GMRL Chief Architect Namrita Kalsi.
A senior official from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) confirmed the agency’s collaboration with GMRL. “All the works identified to develop the metro project will be taken up on priority,” the official said.
Key Road Upgrades
The roads slated for improvement include major corridors along the metro project, such as:
- Millennium City Metro Station to Subhash Chowk
- Subhash Chowk to Hero Honda Chowk
- Basai Road (partially)
- Sector 9 Road
- Railway Station to Palam Vihar
- Sushil Aima Marg up to Cyber Hub
These roads were identified through a survey conducted by a private agency, which analyzed key lanes and metro station access points along the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) alignment requiring improvements, officials said.
The planned infrastructure enhancements include road resurfacing, the development of green zones and swales, pedestrian and cycle paths, service roads, and infiltration trenches. The objective is to improve first- and last-mile connectivity, enabling commuters to walk or use NMT options to reach metro stations, they added.
Jurisdiction and Implementation
According to survey details, the 335.52 kilometers of roads fall under multiple civic agencies:
- GMDA and Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP): 80.19 km
- Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG): 182.27 km
- Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC): 17.07 km
- National Highways Authority of India (NHAI): 23.34 km
- Public Works Department (PWD B&R): 11.57 km
- Private developers: 3.40 km
- Eco Trails/Bundhs (mostly under MCG): 16.69 km
Following the identification process, GMRL has formally requested all relevant civic agencies to establish clear guidelines for the Right of Way (RoW) along the metro corridor. “You are requested to consider the adjoining roads for improvement to promote walkability and multimodal integration for ease of metro connectivity: a street length of 332.5 km has been prioritized for improvement,” Kalsi reiterated in her letter.
Officials emphasized that these improvements would significantly enhance urban mobility and connectivity for metro users, reinforcing Gurugram’s push toward sustainable transportation. The initiative includes coordination among multiple agencies to ensure efficient execution.
Additionally, the survey findings highlighted the necessity of infrastructure development in identified areas, such as pedestrian pathways, cycle lanes, green zones, and improved road surfaces. Authorities aim to create a well-integrated transit network to reduce congestion and encourage public transport usage.
