The Greater Noida Authority on Friday approved a proposal to construct a 4-kilometer elevated road. This road will connect Sector 4 in Greater Noida to the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. This move aims to address rising traffic congestion in the Noida Extension area, as reported by Hindustan Times.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will handle the construction of the elevated stretch. Officials expect it to start from the 130-meter-wide road in Sector 4. The route will pass over Shahberi and Crossings Republik in Ghaziabad before merging with the expressway.
The project carries an estimated cost of ₹400 crore. It will be jointly funded by the development authorities of Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad. This was confirmed by a senior official with the Greater Noida Authority.
“In-principle approval has been granted for the 4-kilometer elevated road because traffic pressure in Noida Extension is set to increase,” said Ravi Kumar NG, chief executive officer of the Greater Noida Authority. “We have written to NHAI requesting it to build the road, which will provide direct and seamless connectivity from Greater Noida to the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.”
NHAI will prepare a detailed project report before work can begin. Officials said the agency is involved because of its proven ability to acquire land efficiently. This is a key factor given the project’s alignment through both Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad.
“NHAI has recent experience with land acquisition in this area during the construction of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway,” a Greater Noida Authority official said. “It is better positioned to determine land rates and manage acquisition quickly.”
The proposed elevated corridor will benefit residents of two major townships. These are Noida Extension in Greater Noida and Crossings Republik in Ghaziabad. Both townships are located near the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. They are known as hubs for affordable housing. However, poor connectivity and increasing vehicle volume have led to persistent traffic bottlenecks.
To address short and long-term traffic issues, the Greater Noida Authority is also working on multiple infrastructure projects. The elevated road is classified as a long-term measure. Another long-term measure is the construction of an underpass at Kisan Chowk in Sector 1 of Noida Extension. It is expected to become operational in approximately 1.5 years.
Short-term interventions include the widening of internal and arterial roads across several sectors. A 1.5-kilometer stretch of Shahberi Road was recently expanded. It has been opened to traffic, providing additional relief for commuters between Greater Noida and Ghaziabad.
Despite these measures, residents say more needs to be done. “The traffic during peak hours is a nightmare. It can take over an hour to cover just one kilometer,” said Anita Prajapati, a resident of Gaur City. “The authority should not only build roads but also ensure proper traffic regulation and remove roadside encroachments that cause daily jams.”
