The government has sanctioned over six lakh houses under the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) for 29 states and Union Territories (UTs), Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced, as published by Construction World.

Khattar added that another one lakh houses would be sanctioned once the remaining seven states and UTs sign agreements with the housing ministry.

Among the states, Uttar Pradesh received the highest number of houses, with 1.1 lakh units, followed by Maharashtra with 92,000, West Bengal with 55,000, and both Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat with 50,000 each. Smaller states and UTs, including Goa, Sikkim, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, received sanctions for 500 units each.

PMAY-U 2.0 was approved by the Union Cabinet on August 9 and officially launched on September 17. Khattar also mentioned that after March, based on state-level surveys, the ministry would announce the number of houses to be sanctioned in each state and UT over the next five years. This will help applicants understand when their applications are likely to be sanctioned.

Additionally, Khattar noted that a survey would be conducted to assess the demand for rental housing for working women, industrial workers, migrants, and other eligible beneficiaries. PMAY-U 2.0 incorporates rental housing as a major component to address the increasing accommodation needs in urban areas.
