The central government has approved a 2.6-kilometer extension of the Noida Metro’s 29.7-km Aqua Line from Depot station to Bodaki in Greater Noida. A multimodal logistics hub is proposed there. This information comes from the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) as reported by the Hindustan Times.
The project, estimated to cost ₹416.34 crore, will be completed in three years and will further extend metro access within Greater Noida. The corridor will also include a planned extension to Junpat village, NMRC Executive Director Mahendra Prasad said on Thursday.
“The 2.6-km extension will take metro connectivity deeper into pockets of Greater Noida,” Prasad said. “This corridor will also have an extension to Junpat village, aside from Bodaki. We want to start work on the 11.56-km Metro link on priority because it will not only take direct Metro connectivity to distant pockets of Greater Noida but also towards the upcoming Noida Airport. We will start work on this once the central government gives approval.”
In addition to the newly sanctioned 2.6-km link, NMRC is awaiting approval for two other key expansions: an 11.56-km route from Botanical Garden to Noida Sector 142. Additionally, there is a 5-km corridor from Noida Sector 51 to Knowledge Park V in Greater Noida West.
The proposed Botanical Garden-to-Sector 142 line is expected to significantly improve integration between Delhi Metro and Noida Metro. It will also enhance access to the Noida International Airport in Jewar. The 5-km link will further boost last-mile connectivity to Greater Noida West.
Out of the total cost of ₹416.34 crore for the 2.6-km stretch, ₹211.80 crore will come from institutional funding, including the National Capital Region Planning Board. The central government will contribute ₹70.59 crore, while the Uttar Pradesh government will invest ₹91.08 crore as equity. The land acquisition component is estimated at ₹10.44 crore.
The corridor will use a standard gauge of 1,435 mm. It will have a 15 kV AC overhead traction system. It will also incorporate a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for operational efficiency. The project will be implemented through a dedicated special purpose vehicle under NMRC.
Currently, the Aqua Line does not directly connect to the Delhi Metro. The Delhi Metro’s Blue Line enters Noida via Mayur Vihar. It terminates at Sector 62’s Electronic City station. This results in non-seamless connectivity between the two systems.
To prepare for future construction, NMRC has already conducted a topographical survey for the 11.56-km Botanical Garden–Sector 142 corridor. The survey includes detailed mapping of coordinates, buildings, markets, and residential zones along the proposed alignment.
NMRC had approved the detailed project report (DPR) for the 11.56-km extension from Botanical Garden to Sector 142 on Dec. 27, 2023.
