CMDA Initiates Strategic Economic Growth Study
In a bid to expand its reach fivefold, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is gearing up to transform suburban areas like Gummidipoondi, Arakkonam, Thiruthani, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Mamallapuram into holistic neighborhoods within the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA).
Expansion Plans
CMDA, extending its territory from 1189 to 5904 square kilometers, aims to conduct a comprehensive economic study titled ‘Sustainable Economic Growth Strategic Plan in Chennai Metropolitan Area.’
The 24-week study will focus on identifying locations for various industries, including automobiles, IT, real estate, and electronics. These new industries are expected to pave the way for increased job opportunities within the local community.
Moreover, the study will pinpoint areas suitable for real estate ventures, office spaces, and recreational activities such as nightlife, street life, and leisure pursuits. It will also delve into employment trends, analyzing salaries and wages across the CMA.
Key Objectives
CMDA intends to establish six satellite towns within the expanded CMA, with the study aiming to fortify these emerging towns.
CMDA’s Member Secretary, Anshul Mishra, emphasized the significance of economic planning in tandem with urban development. The plan includes transit-oriented corridors connecting various CMA regions, potentially alleviating congestion in central city areas.
Experts underscored the need to decentralize the city and capitalize on the expanded areas by creating recreational spaces, sports arenas, and multipurpose grounds, currently lacking in Chennai’s core.
Dr. N Ezhilan, a state planning commissioner member, advocated for eco-friendly urbanization, emphasizing the need for green spaces, pedestrian-friendly walkways, and flood-resilient buildings.
Managing Urban Expansion
Professor KR Shanmugam of Madras School of Economics highlighted the importance of effective urban expansion management, stressing the necessity of robust infrastructure in newly developed areas.
